Natural Capital

Natural Capital is the sum of the stock of natural assets that yields a flow of resources and benefits essential for human survival and economic activity, provided by the ecosystem. Natural capital is commonly divided into (1) renewable resources (agricultural crops, vegetation, wild life) and (2) non-renewable resources (fossil fuels and mineral deposits).

Natural Capital includes:

  • Sustainable, thriving local communities.
  • Rich, fully-functioning ecosystems, including air, water, soil, flora and fauna.
  • Charismatic carbon credits from greenhouse gas emissions removal through improved forest management practices.
  • Ecosystem co-benefits, which include biodiversity conservation and ecosystem services, derive directly from maintaining natural capital.

Natural capital projects are focused on the preservation of the vibrant biodiversity of an ecosystem.
